The Beginning of a House

Some objects furnish a room, and there are objects that become part of its story. House of Ellory was founded upon a belief in the latter.

We believe a home should unfold slowly and be layered with pieces chosen not simply for the way they look, but for the way they are made, the materials from which they are formed, and the life they are intended to accompany.

In an age increasingly defined by the temporary, we find ourselves drawn to permanence. And this is in everything, from the weight of beautifully worked wood, to the quiet irregularity of hand-finished porcelain, to the depth of natural linen and velvet, and the character that develops in fine leather with age. And let's not forget the precision of an embroidered detail that might only reveal itself upon closer inspection.

These are not merely decorative considerations. They are part of what gives an object soul.

A House Collected, Not Decorated

The most compelling interiors rarely appear to have been completed all at once.

They evolve.

A chair may possess the formality of classical European upholstery while sitting beside something decidedly contemporary. A hand-knotted rug can anchor inherited furniture. Fine porcelain can be brought to the table without waiting for an occasion.

This tension between old and new, refinement and ease, grandeur and intimacy lies at the heart of House of Ellory.

Made to Endure

We are interested in the increasingly rare idea that something may be worth keeping.

For that reason, material and craftsmanship are not secondary considerations within the House. They are where each piece begins.

This includes natural fibres, such as beautifully worked woods. Fine upholstery, hand-finished surfaces, and considered proportions. Details that reward closer inspection.

Wherever possible, we seek to create objects that can acquire character rather than simply age—pieces intended to remain within a home long enough to become associated with the people who lived there.

Inside the Atelier

Every House of Ellory collection begins with an idea.

Sometimes it is architectural, such as a curve, a balustrade, and the proportion of an old European room. Sometimes it begins with a textile, such as a botanical drawing, an equestrian reference, or a colour remembered from elsewhere.

From there comes an extended process of drawing, refinement, material selection and prototyping.

The objective is never novelty for novelty's sake. It is to create something distinctive enough to belong to House of Ellory and timeless enough not to announce the year in which it was made.

For the Life Lived Within

A beautiful house is not a museum.

The sofa should be sat upon. The linen should soften with washing. The silver should come to the table. The porcelain should hold dinner. Children should grow up remembering the rooms in which these things lived.

Luxury, as we understand it, is not simply preciousness, but rather it is the privilege of living with beautiful things every day.

The House Begins

House of Ellory will continue to unfold through furniture, textiles, rugs, art, objects for the home, and collections for the table—each conceived as another layer within the same evolving interior.

Here in The Journal, we will share more of that process: the materials we love, the traditions that inspire us, the making of individual pieces, and our thoughts on creating rooms intended to endure.
