Craftsmanship & Materials

The Beauty of Things Well Made

At House of Ellory, material is never an afterthought.

The character of a piece begins with what it is made from—and how that material is handled.

Across our collections, we seek materials selected for their beauty, integrity, tactile quality, and ability to develop character over time.

Natural variation is not something we seek to eliminate. In many cases, it is precisely what gives a piece its individuality.

Natural Materials

Our collections may incorporate materials such as solid and figured woods, natural stone, marble, linen, wool, cotton velvet, leather, silk, porcelain, brass, sterling silver, mother-of-pearl, crystal, and other carefully selected natural and decorative materials.

Because many of these materials originate in nature, variations in color, grain, veining, texture, tone, and surface character are expected.

No two pieces need be entirely identical.

We consider these distinctions part of their beauty.

Textile & Upholstery

Textiles are chosen not only visually, but for the way they behave in a room.

The depth of velvet. The relaxed character of linen. The structure of wool. The delicacy of silk. The patina developed by fine leather.

Where appropriate, upholstery details such as piping, pleating, tailoring, pattern placement, and textile direction are carefully considered as part of the architecture of the piece.

Wood, Metal & Stone

Wood is selected for grain, tone, and character, while natural stone is celebrated for the variations that make every slab distinctive.

Metalwork may be polished, brushed, antiqued, patinated, plated, or hand-finished depending upon the collection.

Many finishes are intended to evolve gently with age and use rather than remain visually static.

The Hand of the Maker

Many House of Ellory pieces involve processes that cannot—and should not—be made perfectly uniform.

Hand finishing, carving, weaving, knotting, embroidery, upholstery, metalwork, painting, stonework, and other artisanal techniques may leave subtle evidence of the hand responsible for creating them.

These nuances distinguish craftsmanship from mass production.

Made to Order

Many House of Ellory furnishings and architectural pieces are produced to order.

This allows greater attention to specification, material selection, finishing, and construction while reducing the need for unnecessary mass inventory.

Production times therefore vary according to the complexity of the piece and the techniques required to create it.

We believe exceptional work is worth allowing time for.

Designed to Endure

Our approach is not centered upon disposable interiors.

We seek pieces worthy of being maintained, repaired, reupholstered, refinished, and ultimately passed forward.

Because true luxury is not defined solely by how something looks when it arrives.

It is revealed by how beautifully it endures.
