Macassar Ebony Edition A study in contrast—refined in black, revealed in wood.
The SELAH™ Nocturne Baby Grand Piano — Macassar Ebony Edition brings the artistry of fine European cabinetmaking to the classical form of the grand piano.
Its exterior is finished in a deep, mirror-polished piano-black lacquer, creating an intentionally restrained silhouette when viewed closed. Raise the lid, however, and the character of the instrument is revealed: dramatically figured Macassar ebony, individually selected and book-matched to create a sweeping composition across the underside of the lid.
The richly striated wood continues selectively through the music desk and carefully considered details of the case, allowing the Macassar to appear as a discovery rather than an embellishment. Fine aged-brass accents trace the architecture of the piano with restraint, complemented by traditional brass pedals and casters.
At the keyboard, the decorative artistry gives way to the purpose of the instrument. A full 88-key keyboard preserves the familiar playing range expected of a serious acoustic piano, while the more intimate proportions of the baby-grand case make the Nocturne particularly suited to private residences, music rooms, libraries and salons.
The Nocturne is conceived not merely as an instrument placed within a room, but as an object worthy of shaping the room around it.
CRAFTSMANSHIP & DETAILS
The Nocturne is built around the proportions and musical architecture of a traditional acoustic baby grand piano. The cabinet is finished in multiple layers of polished black lacquer to achieve exceptional depth and clarity while maintaining the crisp architectural lines of the case.
The underside of the raised lid is veneered in hand-selected Macassar ebony, chosen specifically for the movement, contrast and scale of its natural figuring. Individual leaves are composed and book-matched before application so that the grain reads as intentional cabinetmaking rather than a printed or applied decorative surface. Because Macassar is a natural material, each instrument will possess its own individual grain composition.
The music desk carries a quieter selection of Macassar, allowing it to relate to the dramatic inner lid without competing with it. Fine metal stringing is used sparingly along the case to emphasize its silhouette, while the SELAH marque is deliberately restrained on the fallboard.
Traditional double-wheel casters, pedals and selected hardware are finished in a warm aged-brass tone rather than highly reflective yellow gold, giving the instrument an established, heirloom character.
The piano is equipped with a full 88-key A0–C8 keyboard. Final action specification, soundboard construction, string scale, hammer specification, plate construction and other acoustic components should be engineered and documented by the selected piano manufacturer according to the final SELAH performance specification.
Each Nocturne is made to order, with natural variation in the Macassar ensuring that no two instruments are visually identical.
DIMENSIONS
The SELAH Nocturne is offered as a Baby Grand Piano, with final dimensions determined by the selected acoustic chassis and technical configuration. A typical finished size is approximately 5'0"–5'6" long × 59–60" wide × approximately 39–40" high with the lid closed.
Piano Bench: 34 W × 15.5 D × adjustable 19–22 H inches
SHIPPING & DELIVERY
Each SELAH Nocturne is individually commissioned and made to order. From the selection and composition of the richly figured Macassar ebony through precision cabinetmaking, book-matching, lacquer finishing, instrument assembly, regulation and final detailing, every piano is created as an individual work.
Because of the highly specialized nature of its construction, please allow approximately 11 months for production. Bespoke specifications or particularly complex commissions may require additional time. Final lead time will be confirmed at the time of order.
I would use “approximately 11 months for production” consistently throughout the entire SELAH piano collection. It immediately separates these instruments from the standard House of Ellory made-to-order furniture program and reinforces that these are individually commissioned musical instruments.
CARE
Dust lacquered surfaces frequently with a clean, exceptionally soft microfiber cloth using light pressure. Avoid household furniture polish, abrasive cleaners, alcohol, solvents and silicone-based products. Fingerprints should be removed only with products specifically approved for high-gloss piano finishes.
The hand-painted lid interior and decorative inlay should never be scrubbed or treated with household cleaning products. Keep the piano away from prolonged direct sunlight, heating vents, fireplaces and significant fluctuations in temperature or humidity.
Maintain a stable interior environment appropriate for a fine acoustic piano. Professional tuning, regulation and voicing should be performed by a qualified piano technician at intervals appropriate to climate and use. Electronic, silent and self-player systems should be serviced according to the system manufacturer's requirements.
