Architectural Study · Graphite & Charcoal on Cotton-Rag Paper

Ionic Study No. I is a study in proportion, restraint, and the enduring language of classical architecture. Focusing on the unmistakable scrolls of the Ionic capital, the composition isolates a fragment of monumental architecture and renders it with the intimacy and precision of an artist’s working drawing.

Finely articulated volutes, fluting, moldings, and carved ornament emerge through layers of graphite and charcoal, while delicate construction lines remain intentionally visible across the natural ivory ground. These quiet traces reveal something of the drawing’s making—giving the work the character of an architectural study rather than a polished technical rendering.

Deep passages of hand-worked charcoal create dramatic contrast against expanses of untouched cotton-rag paper, allowing light and negative space to become as important to the composition as the architecture itself. Areas of meticulous draftsmanship gradually give way to softer, more atmospheric passages, lending the work depth, movement, and the subtle irregularity of the artist’s hand.

Presented in a slender, hand-finished antiqued-gilt frame with a dark inner liner, Ionic Study No. I balances the intellectual rigor of classical architecture with the warmth and individuality of a hand-executed work of art.

Designed as a companion to Corinthian Study No. I, the work may be displayed individually or paired as part of House of Ellory’s architectural studies collection.

House of Ellory Fine Art is created to be enjoyed and preserved for generations. To protect the integrity of your artwork, display the piece indoors in a stable, climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, and significant fluctuations in temperature or humidity.

Avoid placing the artwork directly above fireplaces, radiators, heating vents, or in bathrooms and other areas subject to elevated humidity.

Dust the frame gently as needed using a clean, soft, dry cloth or a soft natural-bristle brush. Do not use water, household cleaners, solvents, furniture polish, or chemical cleaning products on the painted surface or hand-finished frame.

The surface of the painting should not be wiped or dusted with a cloth. If cleaning becomes necessary, we recommend consulting a qualified professional art conservator.

When handling or relocating the artwork, lift it securely by the frame with clean, dry hands. Avoid touching the painted surface or applying pressure to the canvas.

As with all individually hand-painted and hand-finished works, subtle variations in brushwork, texture, coloration, gilding, and patina are inherent to the artisanal process and contribute to the unique character of each piece.

Professional conservation and framing services are recommended for any significant cleaning, repair, restoration, or reframing.
